Lip scrubs have been proven to be a bit of a Godsend for chapped and dry lips, but what if you’re looking to save some money and do some DIY skincare?
There are many amazing recipes for homemade lip scrubs, but is it a good idea to make your own or should you just stick to the professional products?
Here’s what lip scrub does
Let’s remind ourselves how great lip scrub is. Much like face and body scrubs, lip scrub is a powerful exfoliator that works to scrape away the dead skin cells that have accumulated on the surface of your lips. This is an important role because if left unchecked, these cells could block pores and lead to irritation, or just generally make your lips look bland and dull. It achieves this via the hard granules contained within the texture which are harsh enough to physically wipe away all the unwanted gunk. Then the nutritious ingredients in the creamy part of the scrub work to rejuvenate your lips, leaving them looking shiny and youthful. Lip scrub is truly one of our favorite things.
Should you use a homemade lip scrub?
Honestly, we’d always recommend you only buy and use professionally manufactured products from reputable brands. This is the stress-free way you can know that everything contained in the product works together and has been tested thoroughly.
However, sometimes you might be a bit strapped for spare change and fancy doing some DIY. In this case, you should first evaluate your skin to make sure it is in good enough condition to handle an element of harshness. If you have deep cracks or any sores on your lips, we’d suggest avoiding scrubs completely and opting for a soft moisturizer instead.

Before we go
As we said above, we’d always recommend you purchase official lip scrub products from professional brands for the sake of safety and simplicity. However, by using simple ingredients found at home, you can make some fantastic temporary alternatives that will really help keep your lips in shape.
Always evaluate the condition of your skin before using a harsh scrub. At times, you might be better off using a gentle moisturizer to minimize further irritation.
